It’s funny how things work out. In our preseason rankings and for the first few weeks of the season our top 3 in order where ST. John Bosco, St. John’s College and Mater Dei. We changed after a few results in the past couple weeks. After the week 8 drubbing St. John Bosco put on Mater Dei things are back where they started. We dropped St. john Bosco to 3 and Mater Dei up to 1 after the Monarchs beat IMG and the Braves struggled with JSerra. At the time we weren’t sure how good JSerra was combined with the big game this week being at Mater Dei we thought a change would be warranted. We should have stuck with our gut. The reason we had the Braves at #1 to begin the season is that DJ Uiagalelei, spoiler alert he will be our player of the week. If the Monarchs and braves were completely even in talent at every other position the difference between DJ and Bryce Young is vast. That is not a knock on Bryce as he is considered a 5 star by most, we would have him as a 4 star. He just isn’t close to DJ. We also now know that JSerra is a really good team after the beatdown of Orange Lutheran combined with earlier season wins over Bishop Amat and Pinnace (AZ). In fact we still may have the Lions too low and we will know after this week’s game with Mater Dei if that is the case. It was a foregone conclusion that the Braves and Monarchs were the two best teams in California. While we still think that, there is a little doubt. That doubt will be cleared up one way or another this week. So the big question was how far do we drop the Monarchs. As you can see we went with 3. I am sure some people will still think they are #2 and quite frankly we thought the top 2 teams coming into the week would stay the same. After seeing how the Braves carved up the Monarchs it is possible to see how St. John’s College could do the same. The Cadets have a good QB but more importantly they have a stud RB and a great receiving core. It is very easy to see Cam Ross have a game similar to Jake Bailey while Rakim Jarret was getting his as well. The question then becomes could the 2 Miami schools beat Mater Dei. It’s certainly possible but neither have a passing game as good as the Cadets.
While the top of the rankings will be the talk of the week there was some shake up at the bottom thanks to a couple of upsets. Mentor lost without their starting QB Ian Kipp so they drop out for now. We still think they may be the best team in Ohio Division I when Kipp is healthy. American Heritage lost their rivalry game with Cardinal Gibbons. After having the Chiefs ranked in the preseason we had kind of given up hope on them after a couple of losses and definitely didn’t see this win coming. The same could be said for the Westlake and Lake Travis game. The Cavaliers appeared to be rolling while the Chaparrals had an early season loss to Cypress Ranch. None of that matter Friday night in a 44-14 beatdown. Making the highest debut this week is Duncanville. The Panthers have actually played some out of state games this year, unlike most Texas teams, and they are beating teams badly. The second new team in the rankings this week is Christian Brothers. The Cadets are clearly the best team in Missouri after beating Rockhurst 45-7 this week. Their only loss of the season is to #2 St. John’s by 10. The last new team this week is Bergen Catholic. The Crusaders appear to be the best team in New Jersey, at least for now, and the win over Grayson is looking a little better after this week.
As mentioned the big game of the week will once again be a Trinity League game this time between Mater Dei and JSerra.
