Week 5 is in the books and it is one we sure won’t forget anytime soon. We finally can answer the IMG vs Trinity League and Broward vs Dade who’s better question, at least until they decide to play each other again. The Mater Dei and IMG game lived up to all the hype. Granted the refs got way too involved but sometimes that is to be expected in high school football. If they played this game 10 teams neither team probably wins more than 6 but on the night it mattered the Monarchs pull out the 28-24 win and move up to #2 in the rankings We can all now look forward to the Mater Dei versus St. John Bosco game in a few weeks to see who is #1. The IMG loss all but assures that either mater Dei or St. John Bosco will be the national champion. IMG and St. John’s College would have both been in the mix had IMG won but this kills IMG’s chances and really hurts St. John’s College unless they decided to reschedule their game.
The other big game of the week went down in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Central came out on top with a convincing 43-27 win. As usual the Rockets used their fierce running game to wear their opponent down. After playing St. John’s College to a virtual tie on the road paired with this impressive win on the road the Rockets are now the #4 team in our poll. The scary part is they might not even be the best public school team in Miami. We won’t now the answer to that until late October when they take on Carol City. For now the Rockets have earned the higher ranking.
Also this week Rush Propst again showed why he is one of the greatest high school coaches of all time. He took Colquitt County to Grayson and got an impressive road win. The Packers may not have all the D1 talent that the Rams have but Coach Propst is the great equalizer. The Packers are now clearly the best team in Georgia. There is one new team in the rankings this week and that is Warren Central. We took a wait and see approach with the Warriors once Justin Britt went down. They do not seem to have missed a beat with David bell and Romeir Elliott forming one of the best RB/WR combos in the country.
The games this week are the weakest slate so far this year but that is mostly due to the big out of state matchups coming to an end. That being said these in state and in district games are just as if not even more important to the teams looking to win a state title. Check out who the experts pick in that games plus the other Top 10 games of the week in the Pickem Contest later this week.
