There is only one week left of high school football left. Where did the time go? Every state except Texas has now complete their seasons. The Georgia and Texas playoffs give us the biggest shakeups this week. The game of the week was Duncanville vs Allen. We had been led to believe by some local Texas sources and all the local polls that Allen was the best team in the state. We had them there for most of the year but we weren’t convinced. Their last 2 games were far from impressive. We made the move and jumped North Shore over them a few weeks back. We picked Duncanville in the Expert Pick’Em to win the game but for some reason left Allen above them in the rankings. The Panthers showed up in a big way and jumped on the Eagles early leading by 21 at the half. The Eagles never gave up and actually came back to tie the game. In the end the Panthers got the 44-35 win. With the win they are now in the Top 5 and set for a Texas sized showdown with #4 North Shore. All the Mustangs did this week was beat Lake Travis 51-10 in one of the more impressive Texas 6A D1 semifinal wins you will ever see. The question is being posed can the winner of this game jump to #1 in the final poll. It is definitely possible although it would take one team dominating the other. The reason they are 4 and 5 right now is that we consider the Mater Dei, St John Bosco and IMG group all about the same so it is hard to put teams in between them. That said the winner of the Texas game will either jump to 1 or stay at 4 for that reason. The same sort of thing is going on with Miami Central, Carol City and St. John’s College.
The other big game for the rankings this week was the Georgia 7A title game between Colquitt County and Milton. The Eagles beat the Packers 14-13 in a great game. Like most high school games there were some questionable calls but Milton played well and definitely deserved the win. After the game we realized we were the only national poll to have Milton ranked in the Top 25. The thing that really stuck out to us when looking at them was their early season convincing win over Cardinal Gibbons who we learned from the Florida playoffs was really good. The Eagles did have two weird losses soon after that but from watching them play we thought they were pretty good and they rewarded that belief. The Packers still had a great season and are evenly matched with the Eagles which is why they come in right behind them in the rankings.
We are down to just the Texas state finals and the Geico Bowl games. Unfortunately because of some upsets and teams not wanting to play the Geico games don’t have as much luster as past years. We are excited to get to see St. Frances Academy finally play a legit team this year although we do not believe Lee County to be the best team from Georgia. The Trojans do have a stout defense and the Panthers will be facing a hostile crowd down in Leesburg so anything can happen. Check out who the experts pick in the those games on Wednesday.
