Week 13 is in the books and what a week it was. We have to start the column off with the WCAC championship game. If you haven’t see the final minute yet go watch it NOW. It starts with an amazing catch on 3rd and 33 and ends with a hail mary. It has to be seen to be believed. Now that you have seen that let’s talk about how that game effects the rankings. First off we were a little upset at what appeared to be the refs making a bad call last week which allowed Gonzaga to make the title game. After last night we can’t thank the refs enough. Gonzaga and Dematha may be the two most evenly matched teams in high school football history. Their first meeting this year went to 3 overtimes and well you see how last night ended. Gonzaga gets the higher ranking based on winning the WCAC title. Other national polls will likely drop Dematha out of the Top 25 and put Gonzaga in or maybe not include either. That would be a big mistake in our eyes based on how good the WCAC consistently is.
There were a few other big games this week that shakeup the rankings. Miami Central got revenge on Carol City in what may be the best second round matchup a state playoff has ever seen. The Rockets move back up to #4 while Carol City drops to #5. We will likely have these two higher than any of the other polls but good luck convincing us they aren’t 2 of the best 5 or 6 teams in the country. The Carol City loss all but guarantees the National Champion will come from the state of California once again. That leads us to the other big game of last week, mater Dei versus Centennial. This one was over soon after it started thanks to Elias Ricks, the #1 CB in the 2020 class. He was responsible for the first 3 touchdowns of the game. That’s not that big of a deal right? WRONG! They were all pick 6’s. Mater Dei’s 4th touchdown of the game was also a pick 6. The Monarchs were up 28-0 without scoring an offensive touchdown. The win sets up what should be the de facto national title game this week with St. John Bosco. The Braves demolished the Monarchs earlier this year but as we have seen from the playoffs this year revenge is always the great equalizer.
There are some very intriguing playoff matchups in addition to the big Trinity League game. There is the rematch of the 7A title game in Georgia between Colquitt and North Gwinnett. There is also a big rivalry rematch in Florida between Cardinal Gibbons and American Heritage as well as some big Ohio playoff games.
