A classic week 3 is in the books and it somehow made things clearer and more confusing all in the same week. Friday night was a classic night of high school football. There were 2 incredible games in Akron, Ohio and Valdosta, Georgia. Both games came down to what appeared to be game tying touchdowns late in the game and in both cases the coaches decided to go for 2. Archbishop Hoban did not get it and as a result lost to St. Ignatius. Valdosta on the other hand did get it and got a big win over Colquitt County. Also on Friday night IMG won a close game over St. Joe’s Prep. It was St. Joe’s second loss of the year. The first was to Marietta, who seemed to be finally getting the results that matched the amount of talent on their team. Well unfortunately for the Blue Devils they were upset by Grayson in a weather delayed game. To be honest most of the teams in the 10-20 range didn’t look that great this week. A team or two could’ve capitalized and shot up the rankings but none did. Another upset went down in San Diego Friday night as Helix put a pretty good beating on newly ranked Cathedral Catholic. The Hoban and Cathedral losses opened up spots for Corner Canyon (UT) and Longview (TX).
Saturday provided some clarity at the top of the rankings thanks to two games that many thought would be close but weren’t. Mater Dei easily took care of St. Frances so impressively that they are the new #1 team in the country. At the beginning of the year the Monarchs two game stretch of SFA and St. John’s College seemed like it could result in a loss. After Saturday’s game along with how SJC has looked the past 2 weeks it doesn’t look like the Monarchs have anything to worry about until their show down with St. John Bosco. Speaking of SJC they went down to Texas and took a convincing loss to Duncanville. The Panthers did Texas and themselves a big favor with the win. The potential national title teams seems to be down to 4 after the first few weeks.
While the games in week 4 don’t quite matchup to the first couple weeks there are some big national games this week. IN a game that looked like one of the premiere games of the year before the season IMG will travel to DC to take on SJC. The game has lost a little luster with the Cadets losing two games, but it still should give us a good read on the Ascenders. St. Ignatius fresh off their big win over Hoban travels to Dematha to take on the Stags. Another game we are interested in is ST. John Bosco traveling to Hawaii to take on the likely 2nd best team in the state Mililani. While we wish it was against St. Louis, the game should give a good look into how Hawaii teams stack up this year. So far the island teams have had some good out of state results.
