As we state in our preseason rankings column every year it is impossible to rank teams before seeing them play and week 1 sure showed why. We got a couple of our outlier rankings right and a couple wrong. The big shock of the week to most was Katy taking down North Shore. While we definitely didn’t predict it we aren’t as shocked as others. We had Katy ranked the highest of any national poll going into the week. I believe we also had them with their highest finishing ranking last year. Coach Gary Joseph is a legend and he always has the Tigers prepared to battle. With the win the Tigers jump into the Top 10. North Shore drops out of the Top 10 but there will likely be a rematch in the playoffs and it will be another epic game. St. Louis made us look good by winning impressively over Bishop Gorman. We had the Crusaders ranked very high as we thought this is how this game would play out. While those we got right there are plenty we got wrong. The uncertainty surrounding Narbonne is clearly a problem. Saguaro wasn’t quite up to the task of play a very good Cathedral Catholic team. We thought JSerra would take down St. Joseph Regional but they didn’t. Lake Travis going easily down to Arlington Martin was a bit of a surprise. Could the Warriors be this year’s North Shore or Duncanville. Only time will tell. Entering the rankings this week are two teams from Ohio, Archbishop Hoban and Mentor, Miami Northwestern off their win over Carol City plus Allen and John Curtis reenter the rankings after being ranked in the preseason.

Once again this week there are a number of big games on the slate. They include #5 IMG vs #16 Miami Northwestern, #4 St. John’s vs #18 St. Joe’s Prep, #14 Centennial vs Cathedral Catholic, #24 John Curtis vs Edna Karr and a huge battle in Miami between Central and Carol City.
